A Handmade Gumball Machine

Here's a really fun and easy gift!

Supplies needed:

Terracotta pot with base
Paint (spray paint OR acrylic paint)
Wooden knob
Glass fish bowl/vase
Hot glue gun

STEP 1:

Either using acrylic paint or spray paint, prepare your pot, base and wooden knob. Set aside to dry.

STEP 2:

Using a hot glue gun, adhere the wooden knob to the bottom of the pot base. Then adhere the glass bowl base to the base of the terracotta pot with your hot glue gun.

STEP 3:

Fill your bowl with gumballs. Then place "lid" on top of the glass bowl.

Keep for yourself to enjoy or...wrap it up and give it as a fun and thoughtful gift!

Heartfelt Treasures Card

This set--Heartfelt Treasures--is so beautiful! I've had it ever since our Spring/Summer Idea Book came out. Can you believe this is the first time I've used it?!?! I can't!

The stamp set is associated with our Sophia Collection which is full of different hues of pink. I wanted to try something a little different so I used Cocoa, Sweet Leaf, Juniper and New England Ivy inks. I {heart} the results!

While it doesn't look like it in the photo, I used a Juniper Sparkle in the center of the flower. To finish it off I added a bit of our Stardust Glitz Glitter Gel to add a little more shimmer.

CTMH Spray Pen--Something to Talk About!

I saw this review last week about our *NEW* Spray Pens and couldn't resist sharing it with you.

CTMH Spray Pens vs. Inkessentials Mini Misters by Ranger

It's no secret, that like other industries, as things evolve, so do the tools of the trade. Even the simplest of tools see improvement over time, and the Spray Pen by Close To My Heart is a great example of such an evolution. Similar in form and function to the Inkessentials™ Mini Misters™ by Ranger, you can use the Spray Pen to 'mist' your projects and create visually interesting techniques with ink, paint, colour washes, alcohol, or other liquid media. Or, if you just need a handy alternate dispenser, you can even fill the Spray Pen with your favorite stamp cleaner (although you have to admit, that's not very exciting). If you're not already familiar with the mister tools, you can always pop over and read a 2008 article by Heather Strenzwilk where she gives the low-down on the Ranger Mini Misters.

So at this point you might be wondering, what I consider to be the big evolution? How could such a simple product be so drastically improved? Well, to start, let's take a close up look at the two products side-by-side.

The most obvious difference between the two products is their size. The Close To My Heart Spray Pen is about a third larger overall affecting the relative size of both the cap and the liquid storage compartment (the barrel). The benefit of the larger container should be obvious....with a larger container, you can mix more media, and that's definitely a good thing. (I'll talk about the cap in a minute).

Now let's take another look.

You might notice, that on the flip side of the CTMH Spray Pen, you'll see measurement lines - a very handy feature that is missing from the Ranger Mini Mister. With the measurement lines clearly marked on the barrel, you can more 'scientifically' mix your media (think 4 parts water to 1 part paint, or 2 drops reinker to 6 parts water). This also means that it will be much easier to duplicate a mixture that you absolutely love at a later date. No more guess work. Pure genius! The Ranger Mini Mister on the other hand has product logos on both sides of the barrel, no measurement lines.

Next, let's look at the cap/nozzle area as there's a couple of major differences here. On the Ranger version, the entire barrel is smooth. The smooth finish extends to cover the part of the barrel that you 'twist' to remove the nozzle and fill the compartment. In contrast, this 'twistable' section of the CTMH product is textured, in order to give you better grip. This textured finish is particularly helpful if your hands are damp.

And now the cap.....again, there are a couple of differences. First, the CTMH cap is made of essentially the same material as the rest of the unit. The Ranger cap is quite thin in comparison, and might not stand up quite as well to even a little abuse. I'm thinking that if it drops on the floor, and I step on it, it's likely going to crack, rendering it essentially useless. The CTMH version on the other hand is more substantial, and although I'm not willing to put it to the test (sorry), I'm pretty certain I could step on it without hurting it too too badly.

Secondly, there is a series of holes in the top of the CTMH Spray Pen cap, and the Mini Mister doesn't have these. We've seen this type of thing before, and it serves a dual purpose. First, the holes allow air to be pushed out of the cap as your closing it to ensure that it closes snugly, and second, it's a safety feature. If for some reason a child was to put the cap in their mouth and swallow it, the vent holes in the cap could prevent asphyxiation. The other major difference in the caps, is the presence of the 'pocket clip' on the CTMH version. While I probably won't be carrying the Spray Pens in my shirt pocket any time soon, it is beneficial. Not only can I use the clip to secure the Spray Pen to the inside of my crop bag, but by virtue of it's existence the 'pocket clip' stops the Pen (when capped) from rolling off the table, and stops the cap rolling off the table (and under my feet) when the Spray Pen is in use. Once again, a small improvement in design has what I consider big benefit.

When it comes to function, these pens are virtually identical. Both pens 'pump' easily, and with neither version have I experienced 'clogging'. I do find the CTMH pen a bit easier to operate though because it feels more substantial. When spraying, the Mini Mister feels almost 'consumed' by my hand, whereas the CTMH version does not. This is perhaps a matter of personal preference, and if you're used to the feel of one version, you may find it initially awkward to make the switch, but it'll be easy to adjust either way. Looking very closely at the actual nozzles of the two pens reveals a minor difference, in that the little plastic piece which is responsible for directing the spray on the CTMH Spray Pen is angled downward ever so slightly whereas the Ranger version is completely straight. I'm not sure if this can really be considered a benefit, as I've not noticed any functional difference. I can only assume that the nozzle was in fact engineered this way for a reason, and presumably to provide some benefit - that's the best explanation I can offer you on that one unfortunately.

Before I get to the creative stuff, you're probably wondering about price. Does the price tag reflect the 'improvements' I've mentioned? Well, I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised to learn that the CTMH Spray Pens are priced very similarly to (if not better than in some cases) the Ranger Mini Misters. A 3-pack is available for just US$3.95 / CAN$4.50. Even once you add the shipping and taxes (if applicable in your area), these are definitely not going to break the bank. The Ranger Mini Misters I've purchased, I've always paid around CAN$5.00 for the 3-pack, regular priced, at various locations.

Now the fun stuff.....here's how I've used misters recently.

Using my CTMH Spray Pen and a mixture of reinker and water, I misted a 3x3 inch acrylic block and then used it like a stamp on my paper. This created the pink/white background for my focal image. I love the way that with this method I was able to get a nice solid pink in the middle, surrounded by what looks like over-spray.

For this second sample, I combined CTMH Create-A-Shade Paint, Water and Reinker and used the mixture to 'mist' the large green panel which was previously embossed (using a Tim Holtz Texture Fade), and then inked with both brown and juniper colored inks. Unfortunately, if I do say so myself, this photo does not do the card justice. I hope though that you can at least catch a glimpse of the shimmering splotches. Adding the pearl paint to the mixture, your spray takes on an iridescent look, and it's actually quite shiny! It's similar to the look you would get with commercial mists that are designed to sparkle.

So....to wrap this up, here's a quick summary of how I view the product differences (red indicates distinct product advantages). Remember from the perspective of function and price, the products are virtually identical.

The one fact that I have not tested is whether the CTMH Spray Pens fit in the (very compact) Inkessentials™ Mini Mister Organizer storage block by Ranger. Both the CTMH Spray Pen and the Mini Misters appear to have the same circumference (although I don't have a micrometer; if there is a difference it appears that minute), and so I would assume the Spray Pens would fit, but I would love it if somebody out there could put this to the test. CTMH does not currently offer a storage solution for the Spray Pens, and it certainly would be handy.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Here's a quick bag topper made using our now retired May Word Puzzle Stamp Set.

I love the chili pepper in this set. I created the focal point using paper piecing. I simply stamped the chili pepper in Olive ink and then again on scratch paper in Barn Red ink. I cut out the Barn Red pepper piece and attached it to the Olive stem. Easy!

I was really impressed with the process overall, and was especially pleased with how much you can customize each page. I made up these cute little "Bunny Soup" treats for our preschool. Aren't they fun?? It's simply a Bunny Peep, a few Hershey Kisses, a chocolate wafer stirring stick and a packet of hot cocoa.

The Anniversary of Webster's Dictionary

Back in 1828 on this day, Webster's Dictionary was first published. Each year it continues to add several new words to the dictionary. This made me stop and think about all the words associated with the craft of scrapbooking, cardmaking and papercrafting. And even more specifically, the words we use at Close To My Heart.

Are you familiar with the term B&T? Maybe B&T Duos? From the picture above you can see that it is our patterned papers that come in our My Reflections Paper Packs and Kits. What you might not be familiar with is it's literal translation. It stands for Background & Texture. And the Duos indicates the paper is 2-sided. One side has a colorful design while the other side contains the same design only in a monochromatic scheme.

Thursday Tip--Marker Storage

Our markers have the benefit of having 2 tips...a brush tip and a fine tip. This allows you maximum flexibility. You can color in images, whether large or small, you can journal on your layout keeping the colors perfectly coordinated and so many other options.

But the question is...what is the best way to store your markers? Because our markers have the 2 tips, it's best to store them horizontally to ensure that both tips get equal ink distribution.

This can be achieved in various creative ways...in a glass that is laying on it's side, in a rectangle basket or maybe even in a wine rack!

Studio J: The NEW Style of Digital Scrapbooking Video

Thursday Tip--Digital Scrapbooking Tricks

I'm currently working on my video for this week...I'm focusing on Studio J. If you haven't heard of it or used it yet, it's CTMH's solution to the "I have too many photos" syndrome. It's also a *NEW* way to think about digital scrapbooking--we call it studio scrapbooking.

While doing the video I realized I had done a couple "tricks" on my layout that you may not think to do. So I thought I'd share them with you today.

Here is my layout where I've started inserting my photos into the photo wells (see how they have those sections marked with an "X"...simply drag your photo from the upper left corner into the photo well and it'll adjust the photo to fit!) You'll notice that my darlings are looking out of the layout in the left hand page of my layout. Well, I'd like them to be looking into it to keep the movement on my layout so there is button in the floating menu bar that you can flip/rotate your photo.

Crazy, right?! When I first learned of this, I have to admit, I was a little unsure of this feature...it seems like cheating, right? But it really can serve a great purpose. This layout is the perfect example. It keeps your eyes moving within the layout rather than right out of it if I used the original photo orientation.

My second trick (and tip for today) is have you ever liked a pattern of paper but wished it was in a different color to suite your photos? Well, you're in luck! You can click on any of the patterns and a color wheel will pop up giving you both the suggested color palette of your layout and also our entire line of colors. Simple click on the color you'd like and it will change the color but leave the pattern. How cool is that?

Created this fun card with our *NEW* Spring Up Stamp Set. I've been wanting to use this set for awhile now and test out the fun flower it contains.

It's so easy to stamp and then cut along the line and create a 3-D flower. Such a fun, fun set! I also added in a button with a large Pearl Opaque in the center of the flower. And then to finish it off, I added some Stardust Glitz Gel to the edge of the flower to give it a little shimmer.

On the Table Monday

This weekend, my kids' cold finally conquered my immune system. Today was my low point (or at least I'm hoping it won't get worse than today! We'll see tomorrow.) So it took me all day to muster up some energy to start working on the layout you see here...

Nothing too exciting to share as I only lasted about 20 minutes! Enough time to figure out the papers I was going to use and also that I was going to need to incorporate our AWESOME Flip Flaps!

A Fun St. Patrick's Day Surprise

Since we won't be in preschool for all the fun leprechaun shenanigans on Thursday, the kids will be celebrating on Friday instead. And as luck would have it, I won't be there because I'll be at the Pleasanton Scrapbook Expo (pretty good trade-off I think!) So...of course, I wanted to do something for the kiddos (albeit, not way out there because I'm so bogged down with Expo prep!)

Here is what I came up with...

We have SO many Mardi Gras necklaces from my SIL (thanks Aunt Barb!) and my mom that the kids and I were able to pull out enough basic green ones for each kid at preschool. So we went "green" and recycled these. To add a bit of charm to them, I simply added a little "lucky you" tag to each with some Waxy Flax. The stamp set is Take Luck stamped with Pear and Cocoa inks. I punched out some Cocoa Scallops and some Pear Circles with our punches. Pretty darn easy!

Thursday Tip--Getting the Most Out of Your Trimmer Blade

How would you like an easy way to get more out of your trimmer blade? Of course you would! {Insert Enabler Alert} Afterall, if you are having to replace your blade less often, that means you can be purchasing other goodies for your stash.

Here's the trick...next time you replace your blade, use a Sharpie marker to make an arrow or other reminder of which side of the blade you are using (i.e. if you tend to slide your blade in an upward direction, you'll place your arrow toward the top as I've done in the photo). Then when your blade shows signs of needing to be replaced, just pop it out (easiest to do in the center portion of your blade track as it's more forgiving) and rotate it so that the other side of the blade is facing upward. Once you've used up both sides, it's now time to get a completely new blade and start again.

I hope this tip helps you and helps cut down on the number of blades you go through! See you tomorrow.

I altered a card concept found in Originals ("Background Bar"--it's meant for a 6" x 6" card but I wanted to do a standard 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" one instead.) Thursday Tip--Watercolor Pencils

As promised yesterday, here's a tip to use with this month's Stamp of the Month...use your Watercolor Pencils! When I first saw this set, it reminded me a lot of Beatrix Potter and her story of Peter Rabbit. The images seemed to cry out for a nice soft watercolor look.

If you haven't used watercolor pencils before you're in for a real treat! They are super easy to use and such a neat end-result too.

First, you'll color your image as desired with the colored pencils.

Next, either using a Waterbrush or a Blending Pen (can't decide which to use? Here's my suggestion...the waterbrush is best for larger areas while the blending pen is more suited for smaller areas; so for this set, I'd recommend the blending pen) you'll color over the colored sections one color at a time which will soften the colored pencil lines creating a soft watercolor appearance. In between colors you'll want to wipe off the tip on scratch paper before you move on to the next color to ensure you don't blend colors and come up with some odd shade on your project!

On the Table Monday

This weekend I completed and handed off a 42-page custom album. While it made me realize how much I should be getting done with my own scrapbooking, it also prompted me to just play today. And that is what I did. I've been making some really fun paper flowers with awesome texture and depth to them.

Thursday Tip--Great Use for Sanding Kit

Ever cut your paper and realize it's time to change the blade on your trimmer but you don't have a new blade handy? Those rough edges can be touched up easily with our sanding block that comes in our sanding kit. Gently sand the rough edges with either the fine grit or medium grit until you can't even tell they were once rough. It's just one more handy use for our beloved sanding kit.

Why I Love Close To My Heart

It's Valentine's Day...a day of love. What better day to reflect on why I {heart} Close To My Heart and being an Independent Consultant!

Initially, like most, I fell in love with the products! It was like heaven knowing that my cardstock would match my inkpads, which would match my embellishments, which would match my ribbons and on and on. I mean who doesn't love to coordinate/match!?!?

Then I really loved the idea that I could get a discount on all the product I absolutely adored simply by becoming a Consultant. It seemed like a no-brainer. An oldie, but definitely a goodie! Add in this month's Stamp of the Month "Friendship" and you have the perfect little gift that is so simple to make for that special friend (whether for Valentine's Day or just because!)

If you haven't yet finished up your valentines, consider making up some sour cream containers filled with some yummy chocolates. You'll love the simplicity of it and the recipient will love how creative it is! A definite win-win situation.

Thursday Tip--Stitched Ribbon

Want to coordinate your ribbon with your project but don't have the right ribbon on hand? Here's an easy trick! Using one of the needles included with our piercing tool kit along with some of our embroidery floss, create stitched ribbon all your own!

A Valentine's Lollipop How-To

Do you consider yourself a bargain shopper? You know how you can get super deals right after Christmas? Well, you might just want to stock up on some mini candy canes after you see this darling idea!

Behold the Candy Cane Valentine's Lollipop!

Cute, right? Well, here is how you can make your own.

STEP 1:
Preheat your oven to 235 degrees. Line a baking pan with parchment paper. Then place 2 candy canes together in a heart shape on the pan as pictured above. Bake for approximately 10 minutes (enough time for the candy canes to soften up a bit).

STEP 2:
Working QUICKLY (the candy canes don't stay bendable for too long), you'll want to widen the hook of the candy cane and then affix to a lollipop stick as shown (note: it may not hold to the stick but in the next step this will be fixed so don't fret!)

STEP 3:
Melt some white chocolate or the candy melts (like you find at your local craft store). Fill in the candy cane hearts with the melted chocolate. Let cool. OR...

STEP 4:
Add sprinkles right way and let cool. OR...

STEP 5:

You had to know it was coming, right?!? You could stamp in the melted chocolate! Here's how...you'll want to create your own 'puddle pad' by folding up a paper towel and then pouring some vegetable oil onto it. Let the oil soak in so that it's now like a stamp pad. 'Ink' up your stamp image (this will allow the stamp to release easily once the chocolate has hardened) and stamp the image into the chocolate without a block. Leave the image in the chocolate until it has hardened. Remove and then clean with soap and water. Note: it's important to use stamps that haven't been used in inks for food stamping. I have separate stamps I use only for food.

STEP 6:
If you'd like to combine the stamping and the sprinkles, you can stamp as directed in the step above. While the stamp is still in the chocolate add sprinkles. When you remove the stamp image, it will be free of sprinkles as shown above.

Using this month's Stamp of the Month--Friendship, you can make a stunning Valentine's Card for your special sweetheart. Add a touch of dry embossing with sanding to a few layers and you've got the makings of a card that will elicit exclamations of 'wow!'

A Complete Wings Layout

I'm excited to say that I've actually placed photos on my first set of Workshop layouts (Wings WOTG) for this year. Granted, this was my workshop that I did almost 2 weeks ago. But hey, who's keeping track!

I positively {heart} these photos of the kids. Hard to believe how much they've grown. Time passes too quickly, doesn't it?!?

Now to go back to all my blank Workshop layouts from last year and add photos. I can only imagine how productive I'll feel! That's actually one of the benefits of attending my layout Workshops...if you bring the layout back with photos on it, you get to pick a prize from my gift basket!

My next Workshop will feature our *NEW* Sweetheart papers. You can choose to attend Wednesday, February 16th or Saturday, February 19th at 7pm.
